Top American Academic Institutions : 4 Vaccines Supported by the Government are Expected to Fail
According to U.S. media reports on September 1, a top academic institution that advises U.S health officials on September 1 estimated that the late-stage trials of four new coronavirus vaccines supported by the United States may not be positive result.
The National Academy of the United States issued a draft report outlining a federal plan : If a new coronavirus vaccine is approved for use, it will be distributed across the United States. The vaccine will be distributed in four stages, first to medical workers and vulnerable groups, such as the elderly and people with underlying health problems.
The National Academy of America is a private, non-profit organization and the sum of the highest academic organizations in the United States. It has a great influence on scientific research, technological innovation, and science and technology policies in the United States and the world. The National Academy of America provides professional advice on the most threatening national challenges, and shapes sound policies, informs public opinion, and promotes the development of science, engineering, and medicine.
The academic institution said that regardless the phased guidelines, they hope that all volunteers who wish to participate in vaccine trials in the United States can get approved vaccines as soon as possible. The agency also stated that the Trump administration's 'speedy operation' is expected to support as many as seven Phase III trials of 30,000 people, and four of them are expected to fail.
The agency wrote in the draft report : '4 of these trials will fail, and 3 trials will be successful. With a 1:1 ratio of members of the treatment group to the placebo group, there are 15,000 in each trial. Participants were assigned a placebo and will receive the final approved vaccine.'
According to a study published in the scientific journal 'Biostatistics', the success rate of infectious disease vaccines passing clinical trials and obtaining regulatory approvals was 33.4%.
As part of Operation Warp Speed, as of last month, the United States has invested billions of dollars in six possible vaccine projects, including pharmaceutical companies Pfizer, Moderna, and AstraZeneca. The companys' vaccines have all entered Phase III trials.
It is said that some candidate vaccines have already been produced before they have been approved by the regulatory authorities. U.S. health officials have been accelerating the development of vaccine candidates through multiple stages of research, but if the vaccine is ultimately ineffective or unsafe, doing so may be futile.
U.S. health officials said they are optimistic that they will find at least one safe and effective vaccine by the end of this year, and more vaccines may be found by the beginning of 2021.
Scientists say that although scientists hope to find a safe and effective vaccine, there is never a guarantee. They warned that there are still questions about how healthy patients who have been infected with the virus will respond to the vaccine.
