WHO : 172 Countries and Regions have Joined the 'New Coronavirus Vaccine Global Access Mechanism'
WHO Director-General Tan Desai said at a press conference on August 24 that 172 countries and regions have joined the 'Covid-19 Global Access Mechanism' or COVAX under the framework of the 'Accelerator for Tools to Combat New Coronary Pneumonia' international cooperation initiative. There are 9 vaccines under this mechanism and WHO is evaluating them to ensure that as many vaccine products as possible are obtained. In addition, WHO is also evaluating other vaccine candidates.
The 'Global Access Mechanism for New Coronary Vaccines' initiated by the WHO aims to provide about 2 billion new coronavirus vaccines by the end of 2021. WHO stated that this cooperation framework is a key mechanism for international joint procurement of vaccines. After successful vaccine development, all countries in the mechanism can obtain safe and effective vaccines fairly. Vaccine development is a long-term, complex, and high-risk process. Large-scale international cooperation cannot only share risks, but also effectively reduce procurement costs.
